When Controversy Meets Culture: Literature Festival Cancels Ex-MP's Appearance Amid Assault Allegations

A literature festival has made a significant decision to cancel an event featuring former MP Jonathan Edwards, who received a police caution for assaulting his then-wife. Scheduled for April 25 at the Llandeilo Lit Fest, Edwards was set to discuss his memoir, Into the Abyss, but the festival’s organizers ultimately felt that the potential for harm and distress to individuals named in the book was too serious to ignore.

Edwards previously served as the MP for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr, representing Plaid Cymru before he resigned from the party and politics altogether in 2024. His conduct, which included the May 2020 assault, led to his suspension from Plaid, sparking controversy when he was reinstated in 2022.

The event was initially promoted as essential for Welsh political fans, but after reevaluating the content of Edwards’s memoir, the festival’s organizers stated, “the nature and content of the recently published book are not aligned with the values and principles of our festival.” They emphasized their commitment to a festival that prioritizes inclusivity and a respectful atmosphere for all participants.

Additionally, the festival reiterated its dedication through social media, focusing on maintaining a space where all individuals feel valued and respected. Edwards, however, chose not to comment on the cancellation.
