A New Dawn for Hamilton: By-Election Set to Honor McKelvie's Legacy

On 5 June, voters in Hamilton, Larkhall, and Stonehouse will head to the polls for a by-election to elect a successor to the late SNP MSP Christina McKelvie who tragically passed away last month at age 57, following a battle with secondary breast cancer. The announcement of the by-election date came from Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone. This election marks the first Holyrood by-election since 2019.

The political landscape is heating up as the SNP and Labour are viewed as the key competitors for this crucial seat, both eager to gain momentum leading into the next Scottish Parliament election in 2026. The SNP’s candidate, Katy Loudon, a dedicated South Lanarkshire councillor and former school teacher, is attempting to redeem herself after previous election defeats to Labour’s Michael Shanks in 2023. Loudon affirmed her commitment, stating that her campaign hinges on continuing the incredible legacy of McKelvie and advocating for the local community.

Meanwhile, Scottish Labour’s Deputy Leader Jackie Baillie emphasizes that this election is an opportunity for constituents to pursue a new direction with Labour. With emotions still running high from McKelvie’s recent funeral—where friends, family, and colleagues paid heartfelt tributes, including remarks from First Minister John Swinney—the community is poised to engage in a significant electoral process amidst a backdrop of remembrance and hope.
