Zelensky Urges US Resolve as Russia Pushes for Sanction Lifts Amid Ceasefire Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the US would maintain a strong stance against Russia’s demands to lift sanctions as part of a ceasefire agreement concerning the Black Sea. In a recent panel interview in Paris, he responded to questions about whether the US would bow to Russian pressure, stating he hopes they won’t, while acknowledging the bipartisan support he has received. Following three days of talks involving US officials, a ceasefire was tentatively agreed upon, but the Kremlin soon issued strict conditions including the lifting of sanctions on various financial institutions. The US is reportedly considering these requests while the EU firmly stated that sanctions would not be lifted until Russian troops withdraw completely from Ukrainian territory.
Zelensky voiced concerns regarding potential influences of Russian narratives in the US and highlighted the importance of unwavering support from allies, particularly as European nations scramble to address the shift in US foreign policy under President Trump. He emphasized Ukraine’s determination to join NATO, asserting that the country’s combat experience would enhance the alliance. The meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron resulted in a significant commitment of €2bn in military aid from France. Macron reiterated that Russia cannot dictate the conditions for peace, dismissing the Kremlin’s insistence on lifting sanctions. With a key meeting of European leaders set to take place, the urgency for consolidated support for Ukraine’s defense is more crucial than ever.
