UK Stands Firm: Starmer Reaffirms Support for Ukraine's NATO Membership Amid Trump Administration Doubts
Sir Keir Starmer has reiterated the UK’s commitment to support Ukraine’s bid to join NATO, despite skepticism expressed by figures in the Trump administration, who deem NATO membership for Ukraine as unrealistic. In a recent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Starmer reassured him of the UK’s unwavering support, aligning with the commitments made during last year’s NATO summit in Washington alongside President Joe Biden. Starmer emphasized that discussions regarding Ukraine should not occur without Ukraine involved, reiterating the need for strong security guarantees, lethal aid, and a sovereign future for the nation.
As the Munich Security Conference approached, Starmer and Zelensky underscored the importance of demonstrating international unity in support of Ukraine. This response contrasts sharply with comments from Trump’s administration, particularly from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who dismissed the prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership and questioned the feasibility of restoring Ukraine’s territory to pre-2014 conditions. While Trump himself is reported to engage in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Starmer maintains a distinct stance, asserting that Ukraine remains on an ‘irreversible path’ to NATO membership as per alliance agreements.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy also held discussions with US Vice President JD Vance at the security conference, expressing optimism regarding collaborative views on Ukraine’s involvement in potential peace negotiations. Their discourse suggested a shared belief that Ukraine must be included in any settlement discussions to secure lasting peace. As tensions persist in the region with Putin allegedly not preparing for negotiations, both UK leaders emphasized the necessity for unified pressure from allies on Russia.
