UK and India Set to Energize Trade Talks: Major Opportunities on the Horizon
India and the UK are poised to reignite their free trade negotiations starting Monday, nearly a year after discussions were paused due to general elections in both nations. Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds is in Delhi to meet with Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal for crucial two-day talks. Highlighting the potential of a trade deal, Reynolds called it a “no-brainer,” given forecasts that India will become the world’s third-largest economy shortly.
Negotiations have progressed through more than a dozen rounds since 2022, but challenges remain, particularly high tariffs on Scotch whisky in India and demands for improved visa rules for Indian professionals and students aspiring to work or study in the UK. The new Labour government in the UK has marked these trade discussions as a top priority, with Reynolds emphasizing growth as a guiding principle.
This trade talk resurgence comes as the US imposes reciprocal tariffs on imports, boosting the urgency for India to solidify its trading relationships. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration also views the UK as a key partner in achieving its ambitious $1 trillion export target by FY30. The existing trade relationship is valued at £41 billion ($52 billion), and prospects suggest significant opportunities in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and financial services.
Additionally, India seeks better mobility for its workforce and students in the UK, alongside swift visa processing and concessions for workers on business visas who currently pay national insurance without access to social benefits. During this visit, meetings will also take place at the BT office in Gurugram, with UK Investment Minister Poppy Gustafsson engaged in events across India’s major business centers, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
In a broader context, after years of skepticism regarding free trade agreements, India is actively pursuing deals, having recently signed a significant $100 billion agreement with the European Free Trade Association and set to resume negotiations with the European Union. The outcome of the renewed talks with the UK could potentially reshape bilateral relations and bring forth immense economic benefits.
