Labour Turmoil in Dover: Another Councillor Goes Independent Amid Party Division
In a significant shift within the Dover District Council, Shehrazade Maria Mamjan, a suspended Labour councillor, has resigned from the party to serve as an independent representative for Aylesham, Eyethorne, and Shepherdswell. This decision follows closely on the heels of Charles Woodgate’s resignation from the Labour party, marking a troubling trend of party instability as both councillors cite internal conflicts and dissatisfaction with party leadership as primary reasons for their departures.
Mamjan, who had been suspended for over a year largely due to her controversial comments related to Gaza, expressed her belief that she was not a suitable fit within the local Labour group, which she accused of employing juvenile tactics to undermine her credibility. In her comments, she emphasized her commitment to better serving her constituents free from the restrictions of party politics.
Kevin Mills, the Labour leader of Dover District Council, expressed his disappointment regarding Mamjan’s resignation but acknowledged her ongoing suspension. Meanwhile, Conservative opposition leader Trevor Bartlett highlighted the implications of the recent changes, suggesting they reflect deeper divisions within the Labour party, which now shares equal representation with the Conservatives (15 councillors each) along with two independents. The council’s lack of overall control raises uncertainties over future governance and policy direction in the area.
