Labour MP Mike Amesbury Sentenced to Jail for Assaulting Constituent
Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been sentenced to 10 weeks in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting a constituent, Paul Fellows, in his Cheshire constituency. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 26, was captured on video and showed Amesbury punching the 45-year-old man to the ground multiple times. During the court proceedings at Chester Magistrates’ Court, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram highlighted the seriousness of Amesbury’s actions, stating that the continued violence was particularly culpable. Despite Amesbury’s previously unblemished career in public service, the magistrate deemed the assault as unprovoked drunken behavior that warranted immediate custodial punishment rather than community service. This incident led to Amesbury losing his Labour whip and he now stands as an independent MP. Following the conviction, local voters may initiate a recall petition, as a mechanism to remove him from office, allowing for a by-election if enough support is garnered. Labour Party officials assert that Amesbury’s behavior is unacceptable and emphasize the need for better representation in the constituency.
