Investigation Unfolds: Ex-Union Official Howard Beckett Under Scrutiny by Solicitors Regulator

A significant legal saga has emerged surrounding Howard Beckett, the former assistant general secretary and head of legal for Unite the Union, who is currently under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Following his suspension amid a police probe that began in August 2022—concerning alleged bribery, fraud, and money laundering—Beckett has faced numerous challenges.

After police raids on both his residences in London and the Wirral, Beckett resigned from his position in January 2023. He later pursued an employment tribunal claiming unfair dismissal but suffered a defeat in court. Following this verdict, the SRA decided to launch their inquiry, with the authority having the power to impose hefty fines or even refer cases for severe disciplinary actions.

Beckett, a close ally of Jeremy Corbyn, was initially suspended for allegedly misleading the union regarding a controversial hotel project, which drastically exceeded its budget from an estimated £7 million to an astonishing £112 million. This project is also under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office due to financial irregularities. During the tribunal, issues with the union’s investigation and disciplinary processes were acknowledged, yet the tribunal ruled against Beckett.

Despite these setbacks, Beckett’s legal representatives express confidence as they continue pursuing appeals and legal claims against Unite and its general secretary, Sharon Graham, citing privacy violations. Meanwhile, Unite reportedly aims to recover funds lost through prior mismanagement, ensuring stringent safeguards are established to prevent future discrepancies.
