Internal Turmoil: Ten Reform UK Councillors Resign Over Leadership Disputes

In a significant political shake-up within Reform UK, ten councillors from Derbyshire have resigned, citing dissatisfaction with Nigel Farage’s leadership and accusing the party of operating in an increasingly autocratic manner. The councillors claim that since Farage took over leadership in June, the party has deviated from its original mission and lacks clear direction. Farage, in response to the resignations, labeled the group as a product of a ‘rogue branch’ of the party, asserting that none of them had undergone proper vetting before their nomination.

The leader of the resigning group, Alex Stevenson, who faced suspension due to the internal vetting issues, expressed concerns that the party under Farage has lost touch with its democratic roots. The councillors’ statement highlighted a lack of meaningful efforts toward internal democracy and confidence in the party’s management.

Among the resigning members, nine hold positions in the Heanor and Loscoe Town Council, indicating a significant local political impact. Critics within the party, including the former co-deputy leader Ben Habib, allege mismanagement and disregard for party values.

As tensions mount, Farage maintains his stance, declaring the legitimacy of the councils in question to be compromised. Additionally, comments made by billionaire Elon Musk regarding Farage’s leadership further complicate the narrative surrounding reform and direction within the party.
