Controversy Strikes Reform UK: Ex-Scotland Leader Resigns Amid Facebook Racism Scandal
Former leader of Reform UK in Scotland, Michelle Ballantyne, has resigned from the party after it was revealed that she was the administrator of a Facebook group linked to racist and far-right content. The group, named “Reform UK standing with Scotland,” was criticized for containing derogatory comments about immigrants and notable political figures. Ballantyne, who was previously suspended by the party for her involvement, claims it was a “witch hunt” and defended her actions by stating she had not been active in the group since taking on the administrator role, which she held for a brief period.
In her resignation letter, Ballantyne refuted claims that she had brought disrepute upon the party and described the allegations as “laughable and insulting.” She also expressed frustration towards the party’s internal culture, suggesting there was little tolerance for differing opinions. Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, maintains that they uphold strict standards against racism and antisemitism within their ranks, asserting her suspension was a standard practice during ongoing investigations.
Ballantyne has a history in politics, having served as a Conservative MSP before switching allegiance to Reform in 2021 after losing a leadership match. However, her tenure has been marred by controversy, including past statements regarding welfare and recent scandals involving other party members. Despite promising prospects for Reform UK in upcoming Scottish elections, these incidents raise questions about the party’s internal dynamics and reputation.
