Chaos at Oldham Council: Tory Leader Steps Down After Heated Meeting
On December 18, a council meeting in Oldham devolved into chaos, prompting the resignation of Conservative group leader Councillor Graham Sheldon. The heated assembly, centered around the controversial Places For Everyone housing scheme, saw fierce exchanges between councillors and members of the public, leading to police intervention. Councillor Sheldon attributed the turmoil to the actions of two Conservative members, stating that their conduct contributed significantly to the meeting’s erosion into aggression. In light of the disruption, which attracted a police presence including a riot van, Sheldon expressed his disappointment over the aggressive behaviour displayed during the session. He stated that his authority had been compromised and declared his decision to resign from both his leadership position and as a member of the Conservative group. Sheldon plans to continue serving the residents of Saddleworth South and Oldham as an Independent councillor. Meanwhile, Greater Manchester Police have announced an ongoing investigation into the events that unfolded during the meeting.
