Winter Gas Supply in the UK: Enough for Now Despite Storage Concerns
The UK network operator has reassured that there is sufficient gas to meet the upcoming winter demand, despite British Gas owner Centrica warning of low storage levels due to colder-than-average weather conditions. Centrica noted that the UK currently holds less than a week’s worth of gas demand in storage, highlighting that storage facilities are only half-full. However, National Gas insists that the UK accesses gas from various sources, maintaining a healthy overall storage situation across its main gas sites, which remain about 60% full.
Energy analysts point out that even if storage levels decrease, the UK can rely on imports from Europe and other countries. With winter approaching and high demand for gas-fired power, the situation is being closely monitored; yet experts emphasize that there is no immediate risk of a gas shortage affecting household consumer prices due to current price caps in place until the end of March.
Analysts like Craig Lowrey from Cornwall Insight noted the availability of various gas pipelines and shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as backup supplies. Forecasts indicate milder weather soon, further alleviating concerns of spikes in demand. Additionally, government officials express confidence in the natural gas supply for the winter, bolstered by the end of Russian gas supplies through Ukraine and increased storage capacities compared to previous years.
Significantly, Centrica is considering a £2 billion investment in its Rough facility to enhance gas and future hydrogen storage as part of the UK’s transition to greener energy sources. The government continues to evaluate the integration of hydrogen into the nation’s energy mix, an essential step as the UK aims to reduce its reliance on natural gas.
