TikTok Denies Reports of Potential Sale to Elon Musk Amid Supreme Court Uncertainty

TikTok has firmly dismissed speculations that China may permit the sale of its US operations to Elon Musk, labeling the claims as “pure fiction.” This statement comes after Bloomberg reported potential scenarios being contemplated by Chinese officials in light of an impending Supreme Court decision that could enforce a ban on the app unless a sale occurs by January 19. TikTok has consistently maintained that it will not sell its US operations.

The Supreme Court is reviewing legislation that sets a deadline for TikTok to divest in the US amid national security concerns, with arguments highlighting fears that the app could be exploited by China for espionage and political manipulation. TikTok’s leadership has refuted these allegations, asserting that they are not influenced by the Communist Party and challenging the legality of the proposed ban as an infringement on First Amendment rights.

Compounding the situation, Elon Musk, who is closely aligned with the incoming Trump administration, has been proposed as a potential buyer. Trump’s administration previously expressed a desire to negotiate a political resolution regarding TikTok’s status rather than pursuing a ban. Recent calls from Democratic lawmakers have also requested an extension of the January 19 deadline as the Supreme Court appears to lean towards upholding the current law.
