Record-Breaking Crypto Heist: $1.5 Billion Stolen from Bybit's Wallet
Bybit, a cryptocurrency exchange based in Dubai, has fallen victim to a massive theft, with hackers reportedly stealing $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) in Ethereum from its digital wallet. This incident could potentially mark the largest hack in cryptocurrency history, surpassing the previous record of $620 million (£490 million) stolen from the Ronin Network in 2022. In response to the breach, Bybit’s founder Ben Zhou reassured customers that their funds are secure and the company is prepared to offer refunds, indicating that either company assets or loans from partners can cover the loss.
Following the theft, Ethereum’s value decreased by approximately 4%, dropping to around $2,641.41 (£2,090) per coin. Despite the setback, Bybit maintains a robust financial standing with $20 billion (£15 billion) in total assets and claims to back all user assets 1:1.
The hacking incident raises serious concerns about security within the cryptocurrency sector, which has faced scrutiny for its speculative nature and vulnerability to criminal activities. The company has reported the incident to authorities and is actively engaged in efforts to track down the attackers. Historically, the cryptocurrency market has been marred by high-profile heists, including significant losses from exchanges like Mt. Gox and Binance. This incident underlines ongoing discussions about trust and security in cryptocurrency, especially amidst high-profile endorsements from figures like Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
