New Look Shuts Down Operations in Ireland: 347 Jobs at Risk
Fashion retailer New Look has announced its exit from the Republic of Ireland, affecting approximately 347 workers as it enters liquidation. The decision comes after years of ongoing financial losses and challenging market conditions. On Thursday, the High Court appointed provisional liquidators, immediately notifying staff of the impending layoffs. The company cited the need to navigate a ‘tough external environment’ as a significant reason for ceasing operations in the region.
Despite attempts to enhance their product and digital offerings, New Look concluded that continued trading in Ireland was no longer feasible. The liquidation will not affect its parent company in the UK, which will continue operating its 344 stores and online platform.
In the coming days, a 30-day consultation process will commence to address the situation with the affected employees across New Look’s 26 stores in locations such as Dublin, Cork, Galway, Wicklow, and Letterkenny. Most Irish stores are small to medium-sized, employing about 12-13 staff members each. All Irish locations are expected to close shortly, followed by a clearance sale.
The move underscores the continuing struggles within the retail sector, with New Look’s Irish operations unable to withstand the increasing volatility of the market.
