The investigation into the murder of Brian Thompson, a prominent healthcare executive and CEO of UnitedHealthcare, is now in its third day as authorities pursue multiple leads following his targeted killing on Wednesday morning in Midtown Manhattan. Thompson, 50, was shot in the back while waiting outside the Hilton hotel, where he was slated to speak at an investor conference later that day. The police believe the attack was premeditated, though they are yet to establish a clear motive.

Authorities have released over 200 images of the suspect taken from various surveillance cameras, showing his movements from his arrival in New York City up until the time of the shooting. Among these, two distinct images capture a smiling suspect with a mask pulled down—a moment reportedly captured by a hostel receptionist in a playful exchange. Investigators identified the suspect as staying at a hostel on the Upper West Side after using a fake New Jersey identification lens.

Significant efforts are being made by law enforcement to analyze potential evidence, including a water bottle, candy wrapper, and a Starbucks cup found at the crime scene. A mobile phone discovered in an alley along the suspect’s escape route is also under scrutiny for more leads.

Investigators have traced the suspect’s movements, suggesting he arrived in New York approximately 10 days prior to the shooting, possibly coming from Atlanta, Georgia. Surveillance footage from the Port Authority Bus Terminal shows him arriving in the city by bus on November 24, followed by a check-in at the nearby hostel.

The shooting transpired at about 6:45 AM in a bustling area known for its proximity to Times Square. The suspect was seen waiting outside the Hilton for around five minutes before he shot Thompson multiple times, who was pronounced dead shortly afterward in a hospital.

Evidence suggests the gunman used a pistol equipped with a suppressor, indicating a degree of planning and sophistication. Although the weapon reportedly jammed during the attack, the suspect managed to rectify the issue swiftly and continue firing at Thompson, who was caught off guard.

The investigation has revealed intriguing details from the cryptic messages found on the bullet casings, bearing the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose”—terms associated with tactics used by insurance companies in the context of healthcare disputes. This has led some to speculate whether the killing was possibly motivated by grievances related to the healthcare and insurance industry—an area in which Thompson was a prominent figure.

Thompson’s tenure at UnitedHealthcare began in 2004, after joining from PricewaterhouseCoopers. He became CEO in 2021, overseeing a highly profitable period for the company. His wife has stated that there had been previous threats made against Thompson, although specifics were not disclosed. A reported suspicious incident at the couple’s home in 2018 was investigated and cleared without any criminal activity being found.
