PureGym owner Humphrey Cobbold said that the gym chain is “burning through about £500,000 a day and thats the average over eight months of closure.”

Since the pandemic hit It’s been an horrendous year for gyms and leisure centres, which have been forced to close during the multiple coronavirus lockdowns across the UK. As a consequence the group has had to absorb about £120m of costs without any revenue across all 275 gyms nationwide.

‘It's been brutally tough,’ said Cobbold. Whilst the governments furlough scheme has helped pay staff wages, he has still had to raise funds from investors to help the business simply survive.

He did say that PureGym is ready to reopen when it can safely do so. ‘The sooner the better within safe operating procedures for us,’ he said. ‘We can make a massive contribution to the health of the nation.’
